GROWING GINSENG IN THE FOREST:
(8) Weeds

by Hsuan H. Huang

  1. Not as severe in the woods garden as in artificial shade gardens. You can hand pull before spraying. But to disturb the soil is not a good idea. A little bit of weeds actually inhibits diseases. Unfortunately the better the growing conditions, the more weeds - but the larger the ginseng plants too.

  2. Some people try to spray broad-spectrum herbicides just before ginseng emerges in the spring after the snow disappears. The timing is absolutely critical. But at this time of spring there are not many weeds on the seedbed either. And herbicides need proper temperature and sunlight to work, to be effective, herbicide must spray on actively growing weeds. This has not happenned yet in the early spring.
