EVODIA DECOCTION (wu chu yu tang)
- This formula consists of Evodia rutaecarpa, Panax quinquofolium, Ziziphus jujuba and fresh Zingiber officianale.
- Action: warms and tonifies the liver and stomach, directs rebellious qi downward and stop vomiting.
- Used for:
a. vomiting immediately after eating and acid regurgitation.
b. spitting of clear fluids with headache at the vertex.
c. vomiting and diarrhea with cold hands and feet.
d. migraine headache.
- With appropriate presentation (no heat signs, red tongue, rapid pulse), this formula may be used in treating chronic gastritis, acute gastroenteritis, cholecystitis, morning sickness, neurogenic headache, migraine headache, hypertension, trigerminal neuralgia and Meniere's disease.
- With the addition of Cinnamomum cassia twig, it is more effective for treating Meniere's disease.
- Cautions and contraindications:
For severe vomiting, the decoction will be easier to keep down if taken cool. Rarely patients may experience a transitory sensation of discomfort in the chest, dizziness, and a worsening of headache after taking decoction. These symptoms will disappear once the formula begins to take effect (within 30 min.). The patient should rest after taking this decoction to minimize these side effects. This formula is contraindicated in cases with vomiting or acid regurgitation due to heat.
